Lee Burridge - Balance 012

Lee Burridge is the latest dj to do a mix for the Balance series, which is one of the premier mix series for progressive house and techno fans. Burridge's mix spans three cds, which can be classified as melodic techno, amelodic techno and chugging techno. In short, it's a fine mix of the modern techno scene. (Needless to say, it's mixed very well. Burridge has always had fine technique.)

Disc one covers the melodic tracks, with numbers from Ripperton and Lazy Fat People, The Viewers, Kollektive Turmstrasse and others. If you like those bands, you'll like the disc.

I first thought disc two was all minimal, but I was wrong. It's techno with any melodies replaced by noises. So there's no thing, reedy sounds, it's still chunky and funky, but it's all bleeps and bloops, not strings and bass. The best tracks are Reynold's "Bumper" and Spider & Bird's "Paris", which bump and clank around.

Finally, disc three is chugging techno. It's probably the fastest of the three discs. Here, it's mostly about the beats. There are great tracks from Tomas Andersson, Alexi Delano & Xpansul, and Gabriel Ananda.

Each week, I find I have a different favourite disc. They're all good, I guess it's my mood that's making me prefer one or another. But if you're interested in modern techno, this is highly recommended
